1952 — Maurice (Rocket) Richard of the Montreal Canadiens scored his 325th career goal in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks at the Montreal Forum and broke the NHL record set in 1940 by Nels Stewart. (More info.)

1966 — Triple-Crown winner Frank Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles, who won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1961 with the Cincinnati Reds, was named the American League’s M.V.P. and became the only player to have won MVP awards in both leagues. (More info.)

1970 — Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints, who was born without toes on his kicking foot, converted an NFL-record 63-yard field goal against the Detroit Lions at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans on this date. Dempsey now shares the record for the longest kick in NFL history with Jason Elam, Sebastian Janikowski and David Akers. (More info.)

1991 — Paul Coffey of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored his 311th goal to set an NHL record for defensemen. (More info.)

1998 — Jeff Gordon rallied to win the NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway and tie Richard Petty’s 1975 NASCAR record of 13 victories in a season. (More info.)
