1938 — The New York Giants beat the Green Bay Packers, 23-17, in the NFL Championship Game at the Polo Grounds in New York. (More info.)

1981 — In what was to be his final fight, Muhammad Ali, 39, lost a 10-round decision to Trevor Berbick at Nassau, the Bahamas. (More info.)

1982 — Future No. 1-overall NBA Draft picks Ralph Sampson of Virginia and Patrick Ewing of Georgetown faced off with their respective teams at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md. Sampson and Virginia won, 68-63. (More info.)

2000 — Shortstop Alex Rodriguez signed a 10-year deal with the Texas Rangers for $252 million, the largest contract in sports history. (More info.)
