Gary Williams steps down as Maryland basketball coach

Gary Williams, who coached the Maryland Terrapins for 22 years and won a national championship at his alma mater in 2002, has announced his retirement.
The move came as a surprise, given the season ended more than two months ago.
A news conference is scheduled for today at noon.
Williams previously coached at American University, Boston College and Ohio State before taking the job with the Terrapins. He won 668 games, 461 at Maryland.
