The 16th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team continues to roll in league action, after sweeping a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader from the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday at Lamson Park.

Louisiana captured the first game, 9-0, before taking the second game, 13-4, both in 5-inning mercy-rule fashion, to clinch the regular season Sun Belt Conference championship for a 4th-consecutive season, and for the 15th time in the 17 years of softball play in the league.

The Cajuns put on an offensive show, outscoring Coastal Carolina in the twinbill, 22-4, while outhitting them in the two games, 17-6, combined.

The contests marked the first two games of a three-game league series, and the first two games of a regular season-closing home series for Louisiana.

With rain forecasted throughout the Acadiana area on Sunday, it's possible that the two games could have been the final home games of the regular season at Lamson Park.

The wins extended the Cajuns’ current win streak to six games, and their home win streak to 12 games, while giving them 21 wins in their last 22 games, and 28 in their last 30.

UL has also now won 25 of their last 26 conference games, dating back to last season.

The two triumphs also guarantees Louisiana their 36th-consecutive league series victory, a school and Sun Belt Conference record.

The Cajuns haven’t lost a league series since 2013, when they dropped 2-of-3 to South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.

In the opener, Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, and in a big way, scoring 6 runs in the bottom half of the first inning.

The first 8 UL batters all reached, with the first six scoring runs.

Aleah Craighton and Lexie Comeaux drew bases loaded walks in the frame, and Daniella Chavez contributed a 2-run single, while Corin Voinche and Kassidy Zeringue both drove home runs with singles, as the Cajuns jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead.

The Cajuns added another run in the bottom half of the 3rd inning, when Kara Gremillion drove home a run with a fielders choice grounder, to widen their advantage to 7-0.

Louisiana put the game away in the bottom half of the 4th inning, plating two more runs, courtesy of a 2-run home run off the bat of Craighton, her 14th of the season, to make it 9-0.

That would be all that the Cajuns would need, as they coasted to the 9-run mercy-rule triumph.

Louisiana, who outhit Coastal Carolina, 9-2, was led at the plate by Craighton, who homered and drove home 3 runs, while Voinche and Zeringue collected two hits apiece.

Alex Stewart (18-3) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, tossing 4 innings of shutout softball, while moving her career record in Sun Belt Conference play to an amazing 32-1.

Taylor Rahach (12-8) suffered the loss for the Chanticleers, allowing 9 runs on 9 hits, over 4-plus innings.

In the second game, it was Coastal Carolina that got on the scoreboard first, plating a single run in the top half of the first inning, when Taty Forbes singled, before later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kailey Mellen, to give them a quick 1-0 lead.

Louisiana answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three runs, all with two outs, including a two-run single by Lexie Comeaux, followed by an RBI double from Chavez, to give them a 3-1 advantage.

The Cajuns put the game away in the bottom half of the 2nd inning, scoring five times on only two hits, with one of those hits being a grand slam homer by Comeaux, her 9th long ball of the season, along with her 6th RBI of the game, a new personal high, as they extending their lead to 8-1.

The Chanticleers did get closer in the top half of the third inning, scoring one run on a solo homer from Mellon, her 6th of the season, to trim the deficit to 8-2.

Louisiana put up their third-consecutive crooked number frame in the bottom half of the 3rd inning, scoring fives more times, on four more hits, including run-scoring singles from Hayden, Chavez, and Zeringue, to widen the gap to 13-2.

Hayden also scored in the inning, giving her 243 career runs scored, which ties the all-time school record, along with Nerissa Myers.

Coastal Carolina, refusing to give up, scored two unearned runs in the top half of the 4th, when Angela Buccilli and Taty Forbes with two-out run-scoring singles, to make it 13-4.

That would be all that the Chanticleers would get however, as the Cajuns cruised to the 9-run triumph.

Louisiana, who outhit Coastal Carolina, 8-4, was led at the plate by Comeaux, who homered and drove home a career-high 6 runs, while Chavez collected two hits.

Alex Stewart (19-3) picked up the win for the Cajuns, allowing only one run on 3 hits, in three innings of relief, picking up her second victory of the day, while moving her career record in Sun Belt Conference play to a sparkling 33-1.
