Serena, the defending champion, trying to battle back from injuries, fell to Marion Bartoli in straight sets. According to the article on espn.com, it's the earliest exit from Wimbledon for Williams since losing in the third round in 2005.
Venus, a five time Wimbledon champion, was beaten by Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in straight sets.
