NBA Commissioner David Stern announced today he will retire on February 1, 2014, the 30th anniversary of his appointment.

Stern, 70, also said Adam Silver, who has worked for the NBA in various capacities for the last twenty years, would succeed him as commissioner.  The owners unanimously ratified the plan for Silver to take over.

Fans, players and even the owners have clashed with Stern over the years, but no one can argue with the fact Stern has turned the NBA into a multi-billion dollar business.  Stern has been seen as a strict disciplinarian who was always mindful of the NBA brand.
