Saints Trim Down Roster With Cuts, LB Position A Major Concern
Despite making an impression on all media members at New Orleans Saints training camp, undrafted rookie linebacker Eric Martin was waived today, along with wide receiver Tim Toone and safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah.
Two more linebackers were placed on injured reserve in Will Smith (pictured) and Chris Chamberlain. Wide receiver Joe Morgan was placed on IR as well.
Linebacker Victor Butler was placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, leaving the door open for a possible late season return. Butler torn his ACL in June during Saints offseason training activities.
One player was added, as the Saints claimed CB Jumal Rolle off waivers from the Buffalo Bills.
The linebacker position is of major concern for the Saints heading into the 2013 season. Despite acquiring Parys Haralson today in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, injuries and inexperience present major challenges for the Saints. Projected starter Junior Gallette has missed the last week of camp with hamstring issues, while Martez Wilson has missed the majority of camp with an elbow injury. Starter Curtis Lofton missed one preseason game and practice due to health, while veteran starter Jonathan Vilma is out for the preseason as he recovers from knee surgery.
