The Kansas City Royals, playing in their first playoff game in 29 years, won the American League wild card game on Tuesday night, coming from behind to defeat the Oakland Athletics, 9-8, in 12 innings.

The Royals trailed, 7-3, heading into the bottom half of the eighth inning, before scoring three runs in the frame to cut the deficit to 7-6, and then tying the game with a single run in the bottom of the ninth.

After the A's regained the lead with a run in the top of the 12th, Kansas City plated two in the bottom half to win it.

Salvador Perez singled home Christian Colon with the game-winning run, to help catapult the Royals to the exciting win.

Kansas City now moves on to the best-of-five American League Division Series, where they will meet the AL West Champion Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night.
