Kevin Youkilis

Normally, at this time of the year, the Boston Red Sox are trading for veteran talent.

This year, the fourth-place Red Sox are sending a veteran player to a team in the playoff race.

On Sunday, the Red Sox traded third baseman Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander pitcher Zach Stewart.

It's not like the Red Sox are totally out of things. They are currently 38-34, and only five games in back of the first-place New York Yankees. But Youkilis has lost playing time this year to Will Middlebrooks.

Youkilis is currently hitting a .233, with four home runs, and 14 RBI's. Over his nine-year career with the Red Sox, he hit a a .286, with 133 homers, and 563 RBI's.

Youkilis heads to the White Sox, who are currently 38-34, and in first place in the AL Central.

Heading to Boston are Lillibridge and Stewart.

Lillibridge, who has played first base, third base, and the outfield this year, is hitting a .175, with no homers, and two RBI's, while Stewart is 1-2, with an ERA. of 6.00, out of the bullpen.
