Fourteen-time All-Star catcher Ivan ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez, who won a record 13 Gold Gloves, retired on Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Rodriguez, 40, spent 13 of his 21 years in the big leagues with the Rangers, whom he debuted with as a rookie in 1991. He also won a World Series ring in 2003 with the Florida Marlins.

Baseball fans were surprised on Friday by the announcement that former New York Yankees’ pitcher Andy Pettitte, who retired last year, would be returning to the team on a one-year contract, even though he’s coming up on his 40th birthday in the spring. However, Pettitte isn’t the first player who left the game only to return.
Officials at Wrigley Field in Chicago caught the guy who broke into the stadium just to steal some ivy off of the field’s famous outfield wall.

Former Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo has been elected posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame, garnering 93.8 percent of the vote from the Golden Era committee. In his 32nd year of eligibility, Santo has finally reached baseball’s highest honor.
Santo has long been a fan favorite, and his death last year from complications due to bladder cancer and pneumonia might have earned him the additional votes he required for induction.

November 17, 2011 Dale Sveum has been named the manager of the Chicago Cubs.
Sveum was most recently the hitting coach for the Milwaukee Brewers. He succeeds Mike Quade, who was fired after going 71-91 in his only full season with the club.

The news that Mike Quade is out of a job as the manager of the Chicago Cubs was not entirely unexpected after a record of 95-104 since taking over for Lou Piniella in August of 2010. Official word of Quade’s firing came down Wednesday.
While Quade is out, many are surprised that Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg — who was up for the position last year before Quade won it — won’t be considered to replace him.
