Paul Mainieri began his seventh season as head coach at LSU with a shutout win on the baseball diamond over Maryland.

The Tigers didn't get much offense, but they didn't need to, as LSU sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola (pictured) tossed 6.2 innings of fantastic baseball. He struck out nine, and allowed only 2 hits, keeping the Terps off the scoreboard. Relievers Joey Bourgeois and Chris Cotton went the rest of the way, propelling LSU to a 1-0 victory.

Chris Sciambra was sensational as the leadoff hitter, giving the Tigers just enough offense to win in 9 innings, finishing with a career high four hits, and scored the only run of the game. It was especially sweet for the sophomore center fielder, because he missed all of last season with a neck injury.

A record paid crowd of 12,373 were at Alex Box Stadium to witness the win.

Game 2 of the 3 game weekend series is today at 1:00.
