LSU Rolls Over Southern Miss, 45-10
Quarterback Danny Etling threw for three touchdowns and LSU got a solid performance on both sides of the ball, defeating Southern Mississippi, 45-10 Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.
Etling threw the ball just 18 times, but racked up 276 yards passing. Two of his touchdowns were to Malachi Dupre, who had three catches for 100 yards, including a 63 yard touchdown strike. D. J. Chark had 91 yards receiving on three catches and a score, including an 80 yarder. He also rushed for a touchdown.
Running back Darrius Guice had another big night with Leonard Fournette still sidelined, picking up 162 yards on just 16 carries. He reached the end zone twice with a 61 yard run.
Southern Miss (4-3) got on the board first on a 75 yard drive, capped by a one yard run by Ito Smith, but LSU (4-2) came right back with a 55 yard drive. Chark scored on a 19 yard run to tie it.
The score was tied 10-10 at halftime, but the Tigers put the game away with a 28 point third quarter. Big plays were the key as Guice scored on runs of 61 and 20 yards, while Etling hit Chark for 80 yards and Dupre for 63 to increase the Tigers' lead to 38-10. Etling hit Dupre again in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Golden Eagles quarterback Nick Mullins completed 25-36 passes, but for just 161 yards. Ito led Southern Miss on the ground with 64 yards on 16 carries. LSU outgained the Golden Eagles 459-242.
The win was the second straight for LSU interim head coach Ed Orgeron.
LSU is back in action next Saturday night at 8:00 pm when they take on the Ole Miss Rebels,(3-3, 1-2), who were beaten by Arkansas Saturday night.
