Lafayette Police have charged a 27-year-old mother with negligent homicide after being called out to her home on Acorn Drive on July 24.

Corporal Paul Mouton says the mother, Sara Leblanc, told police the child had been sick for several days.

Medical personnel told officers that the child had been dead for “some time”.

The mother told police that on the morning the little girl died, the child allegedly fell asleep around 6 in the morning, but no one checked on her until 7 o’clock that night.

Investigators say the autopsy showed the little girl died because of hypothermia with dehydration.  Detectives learned while investigating that the child had gone about 25 hours without food or any fluids while she was sick.

The mother told investigators that she never left the home that day, but detectives learned through video surveillance that the woman left the child at home to go out for fast food.

The investigation is ongoing.
