Both were surprise playoff teams this year.

And the managers of the Oakland Athletics and Washington Nationals have won their league awards as Manager of the Year.

Bob Melvin of Oakland nosed out Baltimore's Buck Showalter to win the award in the American League.  Under Melvin's tutelage, the A's improved their record by twenty games from a year ago and won the American League West.  Melvin got 16 first place votes.  Showalter got twelve.

In the National League, Dave Johnson was a runaway winner as he led the Nats to a playoff berth and the best record in baseball.  Johnson has said the 2013 season will be his last.  He will turn 70 next month.

Both had won the award previously:  Melvin with Arizona and Johnson with Baltimore
