Hornets Top Grizzlies Behind Lopez’s Career Night

The New Orleans Hornets (24-46) won their second straight game against a playoff foe Friday night, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies (46-22) by the score of 90-83.

In a surprising performance, Hornets Center Robin Lopez (pictured) led the way, going for 23 and 10, joining 7 other players who went for at least 20/10 (points/rebounds) against the Grizzlies. Memphis leads the NBA in fewest 20/10 games allowed this season. One of those other 7 is actually Hornets rookie Anthony Davis, who went for 20 and 18 against the Griz back on March 9th.

Davis didn’t quite put up those numbers in last night’s victory, but he wasn’t far behind. A typical solid double-double performance of 18 points and 15 rebounds helped to set the tone. Memphis is recognized as one of the most physical clubs in the league.

“Everybody was being aggressive,” Lopez said. “I got some cleanup baskets. Anthony was attacking and they had to box him out. They left me wide open.”

For the Hornets to dominate the paint (48-38 in scoring) and the glass (49-33 rebound advantage) against the Grizzlies could be a sign of New Orleans ending the season on a high note. With only 12 games left, it’s important for the second to youngest team in the NBA to enter the off season with momentum.

Next up, the Hornets host the red hot Denver Nuggets Monday night. Tip-off from the Hive is set for 7:00.
