Hornets Beat Blazers Behind Davis’ Double Double

Rookie Anthony Davis continues to shine for the New Orleans Hornets, proving to be the difference maker for the Hornets in Sunday night’s 98-96 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. What’s amazing about Davis’ play is how quiet he does it. There were a few alley-oop jams, but overall, his double-double stat line of 18 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block felt sneaky.

Ryan Anderson was fantastic as well, scoring the game-winning bucket on an and one under the basket after Greivis Vasquez penetrated. Anderson’s bucket and free throw gave New Orleans a two point lead with 1.8 seconds, ultimately hanging on for an exciting win at the Hive. Anderson, who has earned the nickname “Grenade Launcher” for his outstanding 3-point shooting, finished with a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Speaking of outstanding play Sunday night, Vasquez got it done as well. With Austin Rivers out for the rest of the season with a broken hand, and Eric Gordon sitting out (resting knee on the second game of a back-to-back) coach Monty Williams started two point guards in Vasquez and Brian Roberts (who played a season-high 43 minutes). Vasquez played quite a bit of shooting guard, scoring 20 points, pulling down 7 boards, dishing out 7 assists, and swiping 2 steals. Roberts finished with 9 points and 9 assists.

Roberts’ 9 assists led the team, marking the first game this season someone other than Vasquez solely led the Hornets in assists.

The Hornets now hit the road for 3 games this week, beginning Tuesday night in Brooklyn. Tip-off versus the Nets is set for 6:30.
