Hall-of-Fame baseball catcher Gary Carter lost his battle with cancer Thursday, passing away at the age of 57.

Carter, an 11 time All-Star, was MVP of the Mid-Summer classic twice. He spent his first 11 seasons with the Montreal Expos before being traded to the New York Mets in 1984. He helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series.

For all of the accomplishments he had on the field during his 19 year career, Carter was known for just as many off the field. He was honored with the Roberto Clemente Award. Known for his generosity and charity, many of his friends described him as having a “big heart.”

Carter’s daughter, Kimmy Bloemers, wrote a statement on the family’s website Thursday afternoon after her Father passed away.

“I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 pm.,” Bloemers wrote. “This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know. He is in heaven and has reunited with his mom and dad. I believe with all my heart that dad had a STANDING OVATION as he walked through the gates of heaven to be with Jesus.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Carter’s family and friends.
