Former LSU head football coach Mike Archer has been named as a defensive assistant coach with the Virginia Cavaliers.

This will mark the second stint at Virginia for Archer, who was the linebackers coach there after leaving LSU, from 1991-1992.

The 60-year old Archer, who coached the Tigers for four years, from 1987-1990, compiled an overall record of 27-18-1, going 10-1-1 in his first year of 1987, before going 17-17 over his final three years.

After leaving LSU, Archer has worked as an assistant coach with Virginia, Kentucky (1993-1995), the Pittsburgh Steelers (1996-2002), Kentucky again (2003-2006), and most recently North Carolina St., where he was the defensive coordinator, from 2007-2012.

Archer, whose specific title at Virginia has not been determined, was out of coaching in 2013.
