Five Games of Interest This Weekend

The Cajuns are headed to Troy this weekend in the featured game in the Sun Belt Conference.  It’s one of two league games to be played in week two (FAU at Middle Tennessee is the other.)

But outside of the league, there’s a few games worth keeping an eye on.

EASTERN WASHINGTON AT WASHINGTON STATE==Mike Leach took over one of the most moribund AQ programs in America when he decided on the reclamation project that is Washington State.  And, they looked terrible, even on offense, against BYU in their season opener.  Eastern Washington, located just 70 miles north of Pullman, held Idaho to just a field goal last week.  They’ll try to knock off their second FBS program in succession.  The Eagles are a solid FCS program.  It’ll be interesting to see how the Pirate fares against a team a lot more like his in terms of talent.  And, that’s a pretty sad statement.

#7 GEORGIA AT MISSOURI–It’s the first foray into the Southeastern Conference for the Tigers, who are always tough to beat at home.  Enter the Georgia Bulldogs, ranked seventh in the nation.  You know things are going to be at a fever pitch in Columbia.  There are a lot of people not buying into Georgia and I’m one of them.  They played a week schedule after opening with losses to Boise State and South Carolina, went 10-2 and wound up in the SEC championship.  I don’t see them being any better than about the fifth best team in the SEC…at best.  Georgia should win this game.  The question is, will they?

#24 FLORIDA AT TEXAS A&M–Like the game in Columbia, this one is an historical game as well as College Station becomes SEC country.  Texas A&M was hurricaned out of its game against Louisiana Tech last week and that, I think, puts them at a disadvantage.  Kevin Sumlin makes his Aggies coaching debut.  Sumlin is known as an offensive guy but a) he doesn’t have Case Keenum and b) Florida’s defense is pretty doggone good.  But at home in front of a raucous crowd, this one could be closer than some might think.

NEBRASKA AT UCLA–When the schedule first came out, I didn’t give this one much of a thought.  But Jim Mora’s Bruins look like they’re going to be pretty salty offensively.  They’ll go up against Nebraska’s blackshirt defense, which in itself, makes for good copy.  And, the game is in Los Angeles as well.  I’m really intrigued by this one…..and that’s a bit of a surprise to me.

TEXAS TECH AT TEXAS STATE==Texas State’s first foray into FBS play was a good one last week as they dominated Houston, a team that’s going to be in the Big East next year.  Now, they play AT HOME against Texas Tech.  Tommy Tuberville is squarely on the hot seat in Lubbock (although with all the news coming down about Tech’s basketball program, Tuberville looks like a saint in comparison.)  Was last week an aberration or is TSU ready to play some football.   Bobcats coach Dennis Franchione thinks the ‘Cats can be pretty good.  The Red Raiders are eighteen point favorites.  When you consider the history of the two teams, that really isn’t a lot of points.
