Cajuns Stymied By Red Wolves 6-4
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team won their 12th straight weekend series, but it didn't make them feel any better Sunday afternoon after falling to Arkansas State 6-4.
UL led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, but the bullpen couldn't hang on for the win.
"If somebody hits you, they hit you, but we've got to throw strikes at the back end of the bullpen," said Robichaux. "We've got to get guys that can stand in and finish the game."
Matt Hicks was slated the loss (5-1), his first of the season, giving up a single run in the 7th.
Arkansas State added three runs total in the 7th, thanks in large part to 3 walks, gaining a 5-4 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Red Wolves added an insurance run in the 8th, before holding off a potential Cajun rally in the 9th. Louisiana brought the winning run to the plate in the 9th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, before grounding out to the pitcher to end it.
Blake Trahan led the Cajuns in the hitting department, going 2-2 with an RBI and a walk. Both teams had six hits, but the difference was the freebies. Louisiana walked 8 batters, while the Red Wolves only walked 5.
"We let this game get away from us," Robichaux said. "We needed someone to stand up an get an out today, and we failed to do so. We'll have to come out and play for a championship next week when we head to South Alabama."
The Cajuns (42-7, 20-4) need 1 more win to claim at least a share of the Sun Belt Conference championship. They head to Mobile next week for a 3 game series against their old rivals in South Alabama. Game 1 is Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30.
