Cajuns Late Rally Leads to Sweep

During the early season, we’ve found out one thing about Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team.

Don’t leave early.

The Cajuns scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to notch a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart, giving the Cajuns a sweep of the three game series against the two-time defending Northeast Conference tournament champions.

Louisiana (11-2) trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning.  But Seth Harrison singled to open the decisive inning.  Tyler Girouard, facing a left handed pitcher for the first time all season, tripled down the right field line to make the score 3-2.  Nick Thurman, filling in for the injured Michael Strentz, then hit a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly and reached with left-fielder Billy McDonough dropped his fly ball, scoring Girouard to tie the game at three.  Jace Conrad then sacrificed Thurman to third and the freshman scored when Chase Compton bunted an 0-1 pitch for a suicide squeeze bunt for the game winner.

Strentz left the game after the third inning after being hit by a pitch on the left hand in the second inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly.  X-rays showed a slight fracture and Strentz is officially listed as day-to-day.

Sacred Heart (0-3) took the lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Dan Perez off Cajuns’ starter Austin Robichaux.  After Strentz scored the equalizer, the Pioneers got the lead back in the third inning on another Perez single, and made it 3-1 against reliever Ryan Wilson (1-0) before the Cajuns came back against lefty Jeff Stoddard (0-1).

Matt Hicks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of the young season.

Louisiana was scheduled to play New Orleans Tuesday night at M. L. “Tigue” Moore Field, but the Privateers will be unable to travel because of mid-term exams.  The two teams are attempting to reschedule the game.
