Cajuns Complete Sweep of Red Wolves, 8-1

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns broke open a tight game with six runs in the sixth inning and completed the three game sweep of Arkansas State, winning 8-1 on Sunday at M. L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Louisiana (34-15, 15-9 Sun Belt) led just 2-1 going into the inning, but the first six Cajuns reached base in the sixth and all of them scored as the Cajuns claimed sole possession of third place in the Sun Belt.

Seth Harrison led off the big inning with a home run, his eighth of the season.  Tyler Girouard walked and Caleb Adams, whose solo home run in the fourth had given the Cajuns a 2-1 lead, cranked his 11th of the year to left center field to make it 5-1.  That ended the day for ASU starter Cody Woodhouse (0-1) and the Cajuns’ assault continued against reliever Chandler Hawkins as Blake Trahan, Dylan Butler and Michael Strentz all hit doubles to get two more runs home and Strentz scored on Dex Kjerstad’s RBI single to close out the scoring.

Ben Carter (1-0) was solid in his first career start, pitching five innings of three hit ball and allowing just one unearned run.  Ryan Wilson pitched one hit ball over the next three innings and Matt Hicks pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Red Wolves (25-25, 10-14) scored in the first inning when Kevin Fitzpatrick singled with one out.  He stole second and third and scored on Strentz’ throwing error to give ASU a 1-0 lead.  The Cajuns tied it in the third on a single by Kjerstad, who went to second on a ground ball and scored on Harrison’s two out single to right.

Adams blasted his tenth homer down the line in right field to give the Cajuns the lead for good.

Carter walked two, both of them in the first inning, but faced the minimum over the next four innings.  Arkansas State had two hits during that time, but one was erased trying to steal and the other was on the front end of a 5-4-3 double play.

The Cajuns have now homered in eleven straight games, and have had at least 13 hits in their last five Sun Belt games, all victories.

The sweep sets up a showdown with first place South Alabama next weekend at “The Tigue.”  The Jaguars are tied with Troy with a 17-7 league mark.
