The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns athletic department has announced an agreement with Rice University to play football on a home and home basis.

According to the announcement, the Cajuns and Owls will play a game at Rice Stadium in Houston on September 10, 2022.  The Owls will return the visit to Cajun Field September 5, 2025.

The two teams may only be separated by a few hours, but the meetings between the squads have been few and far between.  These will be the first meetings between the two schools since 1989.  The teams have met five times overall with four of those meetings taking place in the decade of the '80s.  Long time fans will recall the Owls were the first game played by the Cajuns after their decision to remain in Division 1-A in 1982.  Clarence Verdin made it a memorable experience as he returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in a 21-14 Cajuns win.

Rice took a one point win the following year and the teams then met again in the 1988 and 1989 seasons with the Cajuns winning both games, 41-16 in Lafayette and 18-3 in Houston.

It is the first game scheduled with a Conference USA opponent since the Cajuns played Louisiana Tech in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
