Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball catcher Lexie Elkins is making waves across the nation with her incredible play, earning her first USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week honor. The Amateur Softball Association announced the honor earlier today.

In two games last Saturday at Applachian State, Elkins went 8-10 with five home runs, 13 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Elkins, batting .451 on the season, currently ranks first in the NCAA in home runs (25), home runs per game (.64),  and RBIs per game (.162), while ranking second in slugging percentage (1.150), and fourth in RBI (63).

"It means a lot to have been given this award," Elkins said in a University press release.  "I'm honored and thankful that my teammates and coaches continue to push me every day to get better."

Elkins is already a top 26 finalist for the College Softball Player of the Year award.

"Lexie had a special weekend," Louisiana softball head coach Michael Lotief noted.  "She works extremely hard, has incredible hand-eye coordination and is a very smart, intellectual hitter. She feeds off of her teammates.  It's a great individual honor for her, but it's also something that we take a lot of pride in as a team and offensive lineup."

Elkins and the ninth ranked Cajuns travel to the northwest this week for a battle with #1 Oregon. Game 1 is Friday at 6:00, with games 2 and 3 set for Saturday at 2:00. Hear all the action on ESPN1420, beginning with pregame 15 minutes prior to first pitch. Steve Peloquin has the call.
