A contrite Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim issued an apology Friday for his original comments concerning the allegations against former Orange assistant Bernie Fine.

Speaking after the Orange defeated Florida in the SEC/Big East Challenge, Boeheim said his original comments were made out of loyalty and ignorance.

Child-advocacy groups have called for Boeheim's firing after he suggested Fine's accusers were lying and trying to get money from the University.

Last night, Boeheim said no one asked him to apologize or told him what to say.

"I reacted without thinking, Boeheim said.

Syracuse defeated Florida 72-68.
