All summer long, we’re going to list the best players in New Orleans Saints history to wear every number, 00-99.

Yesterday, we did #53.

Today, #54:

The pick: Winfred Tubbs

When deciding who is the best New Orleans Saints player to ever wear #54, the choice is limited to offensive linemen Joe Wendryhoski and Paul Ryczek, and linebackers Tom Roussel, Dale Lindsey, Rick Middleton, Pat Hughes, Ed Simonini, Alvin Toles, Bill Roe, Ink Aleaga, Darrin Smith, Danny Clark, and Troy Evans.

Our selection is going to be Tubbs, a middle linebacker, who played for the Saints for four years, from 1994-1997.

After playing his college football at Texas, Tubbs was selected by the Saints in the third round of the 1994 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Tubbs started seven games in his rookie year, before going on to be a starter for the next three seasons.

An All-Pro in 1997, when he compiled 116 tackles, Tubbs accumulated 285 total tackles in his four years with the Saints, including 5.5 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 4 fumble recoveries.

Tubbs left the Saints following the 1997 campaign, signing with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for three seasons, prior to retiring.

In seven NFL seasons, Tubbs racked-up 473 total tackles, including 10.5 sacks, 8 interceptions, and 7 fumble recoveries.

Now a businessman, Tubbs currently writes a blog on finance and investing for MSN Money's "The Invested Life."
