All summer long, we’re going to list the best players in New Orleans Saints history to wear every number, 00-99.

Yesterday, we did #38.

Today, #39:

The pick: Brett Maxie

When deciding who is the best New Orleans Saints player to ever wear #39, the choice is limited to running backs Ernie Wheelwright, Odell Lawson, Travaris Cadet, and Morris LaGrand and defensive backs Brett Maxie, Carl Lee, John Covington, Darren Perry, Curtis Deloatch, and Chris Reis.

The pick, a fairly easy one, is Maxie, a defensive back who played nine years for the Saints, from 1985-1993.

After concluding his college career at Texas Southern, Maxie was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Saints following the 1984 NFL Draft.

Playing mostly as a back-up and special teams player over his first two seasons, Maxie became a starter at safety over the next five of the next six years.

After Maxie left the Saints following the 1993 season, he spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons, two with the Carolina Panthers, and one with the San Francisco 49ers, prior to retiring following the 1997 season.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Maxie accumulated 438 tackles and 15 interceptions during parts of nine seasons with the Saints.

In parts of 13 NFL seasons, Maxie compiled 556 tackles, while picking off 23 passes.

After his playing days ended Maxie became a coach, serving on numerous NFL staffs, before moving to the college ranks, and the Vanderbilt Commodores, where he's been the defensive backs coach since 2014.
