All summer long, we’re going to list the best players in New Orleans Saints history to wear every number, 00-99.

Yesterday, we did #28.

Today, #29:

The pick: Sammy Knight

When deciding who is the best New Orleans Saints player to ever wear #29, the choice is limited to running backs Undra Johnson and Khiry Robinson, receiver Ray Ogden, and defensive backs Gene Howard, Billie Hayes, Maurice Spencer, Rodney Lewis, Reggie Sutton, Vencie Glenn, Keith Taylor, Vinnie Clark, Mark McMillian, Sammy Knight, Keyuo Craver, Josh Bullocks, Chris McAlister, Marcus McCauley, and Herana-Daze Jones.

The pick, which shouldn't be argued, is Knight, a safety, who played with the Saints for six seasons, from 1997-2002.

After finishing his college career at USC, where he was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection in 1996, Knight signed as an undrafted free agent with the Saints following the 1997 NFL Draft.

A native of Fontana, California, Knight started 12 games as a rookie, intercepting five passes, before remaining a starting safety over his six years with the franchise.

A 2001 Pro Bowler, Knight accumulated 28 interceptions as a Saint, ranking him third in franchise history in that category.

During his time with the Saints, Knight registered five forced fumbles and ten fumble recoveries as well.

The 6-foot, 215-pound Knight left the Saints following the 2002 season and signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he played for two seasons, before spending two years with the Kansas City Chiefs, one with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and one with the New York Giants, prior to retiring following the 2008 season.

Knight, in 12 NFL seasons, compiled 42 interceptions, including four for touchdowns, 12 forced fumbles, and 13 fumble recoveries.

Currently working as a graduate assistant coach at USC, Knight was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 2011.
