Anti Religion Group Says Sports Chaplains Have to Go
Several universities have received letters from an anti-religion activist group demanding football chaplains be eliminated.
The website thecollegefix.com reports the activist group, the non profit Freedom From Religion Foundation, has started a campaign under the threat of legal action to rid public colleges of sports-based spiritual leaders.
The story identified fifteen universities that received such letters. Nine of the schools identified are in the Southeastern Conference, including LSU.
The organization, according to its website, is a non -priofit, educational organization and has been involved with the separation of church and state issues since 1978. In its comments concerning this issue, the organization said:
FFRF is sending players on several teams, including Georgia, South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Wisconsin and Illinois, an explanation of their rights as students at secular universities. - See more at: http://ffrf.org/news/news-releases/item/23528-state-church-watchdog-issues-report-damning-college-football-chaplains-coaches#sthash.Efv2xjQX.dpuf
The organization was successful in getting chaplains in a Florida school district to replace chaplains with "life coaches" according to a report on Fox News in 2014.
