Anthony Davis Fractures Hand In Pelicans Win

Anthony Davis was smiling when the final buzzer sounded Sunday night at Madison Square Garden, happy to see his team earn a road win, 103-99 over the New York Knicks (3-13). However, if the New Orleans Pelicans (8-8) are hoping to win many more games, they better hope Davis can return sooner rather than later.

Davis suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left hand in the first quarter against New York, heading to the locker room at the 1:32 mark, never seeing the floor again. No timetable has been set for his return, though Davis Wesley of Fox Sports New Orleans speculates it could be at least 4-6 weeks.

Davis, the face of the Pelicans franchise is averaging a double-double this season (19.6 pts, 10.6 rbs), and leads the NBA in blocks (3.9). His player efficiency rating of 28.35 is second in the league, only to LeBron James.

Without Davis, the Pelicans showed a mental toughness Sunday night to adapt, and play winning basketball against a struggling Knicks squad. Two key players came off the pine with solid performances.

Ryan Anderson, who will start in Davis’ place while he’s out, scored a season-high 31 points, going 7-11 from behind the arc. Tyreke Evans scored 24, adding 7 assists and 4 steals.

“We just know we need to be aggressive coming off the bench,” Anderson told Wesley following the win. “We know we need to come out with energy. When we do that, we’re hard to guard.”

Al-Farouq Aminu was benched by head coach Monty Williams for Friday night’s win over the 76ers. Against New York, he was superb on defense down the stretch, harassing Carmelo Anthony, shutting down passing lanes, and contesting every shot he was near.

“He’s got length and can really move his feet and stay with him,” Anderson said of Aminu’s defense on Anthony. “It was just a great team effort tonight.”

The victory marks the first time this season New Orleans has won two in a row on the road.

New Orleans will try to remain perfect on the last game of their 3-game road swing Monday night. The team will travel to Chicago for a matchup with the Bulls in their second game of a road back-to-back. Tip-off is set for 7:00.
