What Do You Call Eggs Cooked This Way?

I think I have seen eggs and toast prepared this way from as far back as I can remember. I remember my Dad making these simple open-faced sandwiches as part of "breakfast for supper" which I think is another Southern Tradition that has roots going back a lot further than even my time on the planet.

Through my formative years, the concept of removing the center of a piece of sliced bread and replacing it with an egg and then cooking it in a skillet has resulted in what's known as a "Bird in the Nest". However, after I shared the picture you see above on social media, I was informed that "Bird in the Nest" was not the proper moniker for such a delectable treat.

Other names that were mentioned to me include Toad in a Hole, Popeye, Egg in a Basket, One-Eyed Jack, Egg in a Hole, Cartwheels, and Rose Nylund. I am sure there are some other names out there that I haven't seen yet.

But there are two things we can all agree on. One, these eggs cooked within the confines of bread are delicious and two, most of us remember seeing this dish being prepared during the Cher movie Moonstruck. I don't know what it is about that movie and this particular dish but almost everybody I visited with online mentioned Moonstruck.

Regardless, this wonderful recipe will be a featured performer at our family's Christmas morning breakfast. We will also do a hash brown breakfast casserole and there will likely be some bacon. That is if I don't eat it before the rest of the family wakes up.
