The 5th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team recorded two more victories on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader from the Georgia St. Panthers in Atlanta, Georgia in the first two games of a three-game, weekend, league series.

Louisiana won the opener, 4-1, before taking the second game, 6-5, on a one-out 2-run home run by sophomore shortstop D.J. Sanders in the top half of the 7th inning.

The two wins extended the Cajuns' conference win streak to 8 games, while improving their overall win streak to six games.

The two victories also gives Louisiana 17 wins, all-time, in 19 games against Georgia St., while improving their current win streak over the Panthers to 13 games, and their Sun Belt Conference record against GSU to a perfect 9-0.

In the opener, Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the top half of the fourth inning, when Sanders belted a two-run home run, her 12th of the season, giving them a 2-0 lead.

Georgia St. scored a run in the bottom half of the frame, when Morgan Brown singled home Kensey Caldwell, to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Still, it turned out to be a pivotal half-inning, as the Cajuns held the Panthers to that one run, despite the first four hitters reaching base.

Louisiana got two big insurance runs in the top half of the 7th inning, courtesy of a two-run homer off the bat of senior left-fielder Shellie Landry, her 9th of the year, to give UL a 4-1 advantage, and the eventual 3-run victory.

Sanders and Landry led the way at the plate for the Cajuns, each with the 2-run homers, while Reagan Morgan collected two hits in a losing cause for the Panthers.

Alex Stewart (16-1) recorded the win in the circle for Louisiana, allowing one run on 7 hits, while striking out 5.

Katie Worley (8-7) suffered the loss for Georgia St., allowing two runs on five hits in 4 innings.

Louisiana scored first again in  the second game, plating a single run  the top half of the third inning, when sophomore centerfielder Aleah Craighton singled home junior second baseman Hayley Hayden, giving them a 1-0 lead.

The Cajuns were held to only one run, however, even after the first four hitters of the frame reached.

The Panthers had a golden opportunity go by the wayside in the bottom half of the third inning, loading the bases with only one out, before coming away empty-handed.

Louisiana added an unearned run in the top half of the fourth inning, when Taylor Terrio reached, and later scored on a Kassidy Zeringue single, couple with a throwing error, to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Cajuns added two more runs in the top half of the 5th inning, when Craighton smashed a 2-run home run, her 12th of the season, to widen their lead to 4-0.

Georgia St. scored all five of their runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning, to grab a 5-4 lead.

Two of GSU's five runs came on a 2-run home run by Ivie Drake, while two of the other three were unearned.

Louisiana took the lead in the top half of the 7th inning, when Sanders crushed a dramatic 2-run home run over the right-field fence, her second of the day, and her 13th of the season, giving them a 6-5 lead, and the eventual one-run victory.

Louisiana, who outhit Georgia Southern, 9-7, were led at the plate by Craighton, Hayden, and Sara Corbello, who each collected two hits.

Victoria Brown (3-0) recorded to win in relief pitching three innings of shutout softball.

Amanda Chance (3-5)  suffered the loss for Georgia St., allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, in 4.1 innings of work.

With the two wins, Louisiana improved to 31-3, overall, and 12-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Georgia St. fell to 19-21, and 4-7, respectively.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a single game on Sunday, beginning at 11 am.
