UL sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace

The 11th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team wrapped up play in the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic on Sunday, defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes, 11-0, in five-inning, mercy-rule fashion, at Cougar Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The win avenged a 13-10 setback to Iowas on Friday night.

Louisiana jumped on Iowa starting pitcher Kayla Massey in the second inning, plating four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by freshman outfielder Shellie Landry, the first of her career, and a two-run double by shortstop Nerissa Myers, giving them a 4-0 lead.

The Cajuns would add five more runs in the fourth inning, courtesy of a two-run single by senior outfielder Brianna Cherry, and a run-scoring single by senior catcher Sarah Draheim.

Louisiana put the game completely out of reach in the fifth inning, plating two more runs, and going on to capture the 11-run victory.

Cherry, along with freshman designated hitter Sara Corbello and freshman second baseman Samantha Walsh each collected two hits apiece in the 11-hit UL offensive attack.

Sophomore Jordan Wallace (2-0) picked up the win for the Cajuns, throwing the complete game five-inning shutout, allowing only two hits and one walk, while striking out six.

Kayla Massey (1-2) suffered the loss for the Hawkeyes, allowing eight hits and nine runs in 3.1 innings of work.

With the win, Louisiana improved to 2-1 on the year, while Iowa fell to 3-2.

The Cajuns play their home opener on Wednesday night, hosting Mississippi St. at Lamson Park.
