The 19th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball finished off their first Sun Belt Conference series in style on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the UTA Mavericks at Lamson Park.

Louisiana, who swept a doubleheader from UTA on Saturday, winning by scores of 6-5 and 6-2, won the final game on Sunday, 11-2, in 6-inning mercy-rule fashion.

The win gives the Cajuns 12 wins in 13 games against UTA since the Mavericks joined the Sun Belt Conference back in 2014.

The triumph also pushed UL’s Sun Belt Conference win streak to 9 games, dating back to last season.

Louisiana got on the scoreboard first, and in a big way, in the bottom half of the third inning, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits, with the highlight of the frame being a grand slam home run off the bat of DJ Sanders, her 12th long ball of the season, to give them a 5-0 lead.

UTA scored their first run in the top half of the 5th inning, when Sandra Mendoza drew a bases loaded walk, to trim the deficit to 5-1.

The Mavericks added another run in the top half of the 6th inning, when Whitney Walton hit a solo homer, her 6th of the season, to make it 5-2.

The Cajuns put the game away in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring 6 runs, including a three-run homer by Sanders, her second of the game, and her 13th of the season, which ended things.

Louisiana, who outhit, 7-4, was led at the plate by Sanders, who homered twice, while driving home 7 runs, with Gremillion and Hayden collecting two hits apiece.

Alyssa Denham (8-1) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, allowing only two runs over her 6 innings pitched.

Sam Clakley (11-7) suffered the loss for the Mavericks, allowing 5 hits and 7 earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.

With the victory, Louisiana improved to 20-5, overall, and 3-0 in league play, while UTA dropped to 15-13, and 2-4, respectively.

The Cajuns return to action next weekend, when they travel to Mobile, Alabama to take on the South Alabama Jaguars in a Sun Belt Conference series.
