It took a while, but Texas got their man.

David Pierce, the former Rice assistant who has a solid record of winning as a head coach has been named the head coach of the Longhorns, replacing Augie Garrido.

Pierce helped Rice win a national title in 2003 and then spent three years at Sam Houston State before getting the job with the Green Wave two years ago.  While with the Greenies, Pierce added two more trips to the NCAA tournament, amassing a 76-46 record.

His overall record as a head coach is 197-109 in five seasons.

Reports had Texas flirting with Florida's Kevin O'Sullivan, LSU's Paul Mainieri and TCU's Jim Schlossnagle.  In recent days, Pierce, Houston's Todd Whitting and Dallas Baptist head coach Dan Heefner.

Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball has an interesting story on the hire.
