It was opening day for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team on Thursday as they played host to the Fordham Rams at Lampson Park in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic.

Summer Ellyson got the start and she did not disappoint, she struck out an outstanding 16 batters including seven in a row to start the ball game. She also had a no-hitter heading into the seventh inning but it was broken up by Fordham pitcher Madie Aughinbaugh.

Hitting wise the Cajuns got on the board in the first inning when Alissa Dalton laced a base hit and then later scored on a dropped third strike and a throwing error by the Rams catcher Kylie Michael.

The offense got percolating again in the third inning as catcher Julie Rawls scored on a Sarah Hudek RBI ground out. Then, the next batter, Raina O'Neal brought in pinch runner Aeriyl Mass with a long home run into the tennis courts to give UL a 4-0 lead.

The Cajuns bats were dormant the rest of the evening but the damage had been done. All in all, Louisiana recorded eight hits and won the game 4-0.

Alissa Dalton, Julie Rawls, and Raina O'Neal each had a hit and scored a run and Casidy Chaumont added two hits going 2-3.

With the victory, UL is 1-0 and the Cajuns take the field Friday at 2 p.m. to face Incarnate Word.
