School Bus Catches Fire On I-10; No Injuries Reported

No injuries have been reported following a Lafayette Parish school bus fire that occurred just after 1:15 p.m. this afternoon.

Lafayette Police Spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said the bus was transporting students back to Prairie Elementary when the bus's engine began smoking near Interstate 10 mile marker 105.

The passengers were quickly evacuated from the bus and transported safely back to school.

Motorists reported a plume of black smoke could be seen for miles in each direction at the peak of the fire.

Mouton said the I-10 Off Ramp at Louisiana Avenue will remain closed until the bus can be towed away.
