Saints Trim Roster To 53, List Of Cuts And Analysis

The New Orleans Saints may not be done making preseason moves yet, but today they trimmed their roster down to 53. Several surprises were among the cuts, including special teams captain Courtney Roby, and outside linebacker Jay Richardson.

Richardson is a surprise because the Saints only currently carry 3 outside linebackers. Junior Gallette, Martez Wilson, and new addition Parys Haralson. Richardson did well with his opportunities. That, coupled with the lack of bodies, has many wondering if the Saints will add another OLB from the waiver wire.

Other surprises include the running back position. Just as they did a season ago, the Saints are keeping 5 on the active roster. Pundits speculated that Travaris Cadet would be cut, and undrafted rookie Khiry Robinson would be on the buble.

Robinson is one 6 undrafted rookies to make the final 53 man roster. Cornerback Rod Sweeting, defensive end Glenn Foster, linebacker Kevin Reddick, tight end Josh Hill, and offensive lineman Tim Lelito all beat long odds to receive a regular season NFL paycheck.

Wide receiver Andy Tanner has been a bubble player the last 3 preseasons in New Orleans, having spent time on and off the practice squad. He took to twitter to express his excitement with making the regular season roster.

All bubble players will likely feel safer next week, after the Saints have finished scouring the waiver wire.
