Saints Snap Counts From Preseason Week 2

The New Orleans Saints defeated the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday19-17 and there was plenty to take away from this game albeit a preseason one.

One of the more interesting notes from a football game or any team sporting event really is playing time.

So, here is how the playing time was doled out for the Saints in preseason game number two. We'll look at the top 10 from the offense, defense, and special teams.

OFFENSE:

• G Patrick Omameh, 43 snaps (67%)
• QB Taysom Hill, 40 snaps (62%)
• G Will Clapp, 39 snaps (61%)
• C Cameron Tom, 34 snaps (53%)
• WR Simmie Cobbs Jr., 32 snaps (50%)
• WR Emmanuel Butler, 25 snaps (39%)
• T Derrick Kelly, 24 snaps (38%)
• QB Teddy Bridgewater, 24 snaps (38%)
• WR Tre’Quan Smith, 23 snaps (36%)
• WR Travin Dural, 23 snaps (36%)

With Teddy Bridgewater under the weather, Taysom Hill got most of the work and made the most of it going 11/15 throwing for 136 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Hill also led the team in rushing on five carries for 53 yards and a couple of strong stiff arms.

It was also nice to see some of the backup lineman logging some quality playing time in Will Clapp and Cameron Tom.

Emmanuel Butler was a bit of a disappointment as he failed to haul in a reception over his 25 snaps on the field after all the buzz surrounding him in training camp.

DEFENSE:

• LB Kaden Elliss, 38 snaps (55%)
• LB Colton Jumper, 32 snaps (46%)
• DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, 31 snaps (45%)
• FS Chris Banjo, 30 snaps (43%)
• CB Kayvon Webster, 30 snaps (43%)
• CB Patrick Robinson, 30 snaps (43%)
• CB Ken Crawley, 30 snaps (43%)
• LB Darnell Sankey, 29 snaps (42%)
• LB Porter Gustin, 27 snaps (39%)
• DE Marcus Davenport, 26 snaps (38%)

The big one that stands out is the high level of play from LB Kaden Elliss who also led the team in tackles with six. In addition, it's the second week in a row he's led the defense in snaps played while also making an impact on special teams as well. He seems to have carved out a spot on the roster if he keeps this up.

As far as the cornerback position goes, the battle is heating up but I'm not sure if anyone has the upper hand just yet... Chauncey Gardner-Johnson was highest on the list of snap counts with 32 but right behind him was Kayvon Webster, Patrick Robinson, and Ken Crawley. Marshon Lattimore and Eli Apple are your top two guys but who plays most behind those guys is still a question mark...

Mario Edwards Jr also only played five snaps last night and was seen exiting the game with the athlete trainer. This is more of a depth blow than anything for the Saints at this point, hopefully, it's more of a precautionary thing than anything else.

• LB Vince Biegel, 15 snaps (56%)
• LB Josh Martin, 15 snaps (56%)
• FS Chris Banjo, 14 snaps (52%)

• LB Kaden Elliss, 12 (44%)
• RB Dwayne Washington, 11 snaps (41%)
• WR Deonte Harris, 11 snaps (41%)
• FB Zach Line, 10 snaps (37%)

Special teams is a chance for guys who are depth pieces at other positions to make the team and that's the case for guys like Darnell Sankey, Dwayne Washington, Deonte Harris, and more.
