The New Orleans Saints have one less veteran on their roster, following their preseason opener.

The team released receiver Rishard Matthews on Saturday, following their 34-25 preseason setback to the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night.

Officially, New Orleans used the the reserve/left squad designation to make the move.

The 29-year old Matthews signed with the Saints back in June, after catching five passes for 24 yards last season, while splitting time with the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets.

A seventh-round pick out of Nevada by the Miami Dolphins in 2012, the 6-foot, 217-pound Matthews had the best season of his career as a member of the Titans in 2016, leading the team in receptions (65), yards (945) and receiving touchdowns (9).

In parts of 7 seasons in the NFL. Matthews has compiled 230 receptions for 3,160 yards and 21 touchdowns.

In addition over the weekend, the Saints also waived tight end Jake Powell and placed offensive tackle Ulrick John on IR.
