New Orleans Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis suffered a sports hernia during preseason. It required surgery, putting him on the shelf for the first month of the season.

Determined to get back on the field, Lewis rehabbed hard, but could never get healthy this season, suffering various injuries, the latest, to his knee in week 10.

Lewis was officially placed on season ending injured reserve today, ending his 2015 campaign. He only played in 6 games, making zero starts.

Lewis was penciled in as a starting cornerback for a team in need of veteran stability and solid play at the position. Due to injury setbacks, he wasn't able to be that guy this season, after playing at a high level the previous two years.

At 29, Lewis has two years left on his deal with the Saints. If he returns to health, he'll likely start next season at cornerback once again.

Taking Lewis' open roster spot is veteran Chris Owens, who New Orleans signed yesterday. The 7 year veteran out of San Jose State played most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014.
