The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is honoring former Major-League baseball pitcher and USL alum Ron Guidry by placing him among the top athlete's in the school's history.

Guidry will be inducted into the UL Lafayette Athletics Hall of Fame during halftime of the Ragin' Cajuns' Homecoming game against ULM on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Guidry, a Carencro native, will ride in the Homecoming Parade at 10 a.m. that day. He will sign autographs at 2 p.m., at the Alumni tent near the Gate A entrance of Cajun Field.

Guidry, after a standout career at UL Lafayette, was drafted into the Major Leagues in the third round 1971. He spent several years in the minor leagues, then, in 1975, began a 14-year playing career with the New York Yankees.

Guidry posted a stellar 25-3 record, earning him the Cy Young Award, in 1978--the year the Yankees won their 22nd World Series Championship. Guidry earned five Gold Glove Awards and appeared in four All-Star Games as a member, then captain, of the Bronx Bombers. Guidry's notched 1,778 strikeouts with a 3.29 ERA and a 170-91 pitching record during his Major League career.

This year, new eligibility criteria for the Hall of Fame were adopted to allow the nomination of coaches and administrators, as well as alumni whose collegiate careers were shortened by the chance to pursue professional sports, explained Rob Stewart, UL Lafayette associate director of athletics for external affairs.
