Robbins Leads Ragin’ Cajuns To First Midweek Win

Crazy things can happen in midweek games, but the Ragin' Cajuns held off the Demons in their own house, 7-3, to get their record back to even keel.

Freshman Pitcher Gunner Leger got his first career start on the mound for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns, and he picked up the win, going five complete innings and only allowing two runs on three hits. Leger pitched with a lot of poise, then his bullpen mates of Dylan Moore and Colton Lee finished off what he started to bring the Cajuns record to 2-2 heading into their home opening series against Stony Brook.

The Cajuns jumped on the Demons early with a four-run first inning that lasted 24 minutes, but Joe Robbins stole the show with his second 4-RBI performance in only four games this season. Not only did Robbins plate critical runs in big spots, he also clubbed his second homerun of the young season to the deepest part of the field.

Head Coach Tony Robichaux knew he would need new faces to step up this season, and Robbins was one of the guys he saw the game preparing to reward.

"It's his time," Robichaux said after the win. "He sat for a long time, redshirted...he kept working while he was waiting."

Robichaux referenced late-night batting practices his staff saw Robbins taking, and it's clear the hard work is paying him back.

Overall, four Cajuns registered multi-hit performances (Robbins, Stefan Trosclair, Greg Davis and Evan Powell) as UL hit the double-digit mark in hits again to start this season. With the runs coming in with no problems for the Cajuns, it was even more promising to see the bullpen step up and take care of business.

Moore held down the fort in the middle innings, but Lee proved to his coach his potential as back-end bullpen weapon by coming in with two runners on with only one out, and pitching the Cajuns out of a sticky situation. It was enough for Robichaux to leave Lee on the mound to finish it off, despite having more arms warmed and ready.

Heading into their home opening series against Stony Brook, Coach Robichaux is back to even keel with a 2-2 record. After the game, Robichaux announced that he will flip his Friday and Saturday starters, so the rotation will look like this: Evan Guillory will throw Friday, then Chris Charpentier on Saturday, followed by Greg Milhorn on Sunday.

Some things still need to get ironed out for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns if they want to contest with high-level, championship-tier competition. On the bus ride home from Natchitoches though, Coach Robichaux should be pleased they survived the first taste of midweek madness.
