Record Setting Cajuns Sweep DH From Jackson State

A 19 year old record was tied and another feat that hadn't been accomplished in a quarter century took place as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns swept a doubleheader from Jackson State, winning the first game 7-6 in eleven innings and 15-2 in the nightcap before 3,975 at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Blake Trahan tied Chris Webb's record for hitting in consecutive games with a fourth inning single to highlight game one and senior Kyle Clement became the first Cajun player to hit for the cycle since Tommy Bates accomplished the feat back in 1990 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE--Louisiana 7, Jackson State 6 (11)

Nick Thurman's bases loaded single in the eleventh inning proved to be the game winner as the Cajuns came from behind to defeat the Tigers 6-5.    With one out, Stefan Trosclair was hit by a pitch by losing pitcher Grant Cahill (2-1).  Adam Angelle walked and Greg Davis walked against reliever Jonah Hargoves before Thurman drilled a pitch to right to end the game.

The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead off Louisiana starter Gunner Leger on two out singles by Lamar Briggs and Melvin Rodriguez and a two run double by Jovani Felipe.

The Cajuns came back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Trosclair and Girouard each singled with one out.  After a Davis fly out, Thurman delivered a two run single to tie the game.

The Cajuns took the lead in the fourth when Jam Williams was hit by a pitch and stole second.  Trahan then followed with his record tying single to plate Williams and two batters later, Troscialr homered to left to make the score 5-2.  It was Trosclairs sixth homer of the season and fifth in his last six games.

The Tigers got a run closer in the fifth on a double by Briggs and a single by Rodriguez to cut the lead to 5-3, and then took the lead against reliever Will Bacon in the seventh when Briggs and Rodriguez led off with singles.  Felipe then bunted and both runners scored when Bacon threw wildly to third base.  Jesus Santana then plated Felipe with the go ahead run.

The Cajuns tied the game in the eighth whenn Powell led off with a walk.  Clement then bunted and reached safely on an error by Jacobs which got Powell all the way home from first.

Chris Charpentier pitched scoreless ball from the eighth through the tenth innings and gave way to Dylan Moore (3-1) after a one out double by Rodriguez.  Moore got Felipe on a grounder and struck out Santana to set the stage for Thurman's game winning hit.

Briggs and Rodriguez each had four hits to pace Jackson State's sixteen hit attack.  Girouard had three hits, while Trosclair and Thurman each had two for the Cajuns.

GAME TWO--Louisiana 15, Jackson State 2

In the nightcap, the Cajuns (20-13) had twelve hits and took advantage of five Jackson State errors to take an easy win.

Freshman Wyatt Marks (3-0) turned in a stellar relief performance after starter Greg Milhorn was forced to leave with an apparant groin injury.  Marks pitched six full innings, allowing just two hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Milhorn breezed through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third when he walked Tilur Smith and then bobbled Kendall Davis' sacrifice bunt.  Gary Thomas then singled to load the bases with no outs.  Milhorn had to leave after going 0-2 to leadoff batter Lamar Briggs.  Marks finished the strikeout and allowed a run to score on a ground ball before getting Jovany Felipe on a called third strike to end the inning with JSU (21-13) leading 1-0.

The Cajuns got the run back on a double by Kyle Clement, a bunt by Joe Robbins and a Trahan sacrifice fly.  Louisiana took the lead for good in the fourth when Brenn Conrad singled with one out and after a strikeout, Clement took starter Rene Colon (4-1) over the right field wall for his first career homer to make the score 3-1.  Robbins and Trahan reached on consecutive errors by Smith and Girouard made it a four run inning with an RBI single.

An RBI groundout by Conrad and another error got the Cajuns to more runs in the fifth and Louisiana put the game away in the seventh, scoring eight runs.  Clement started the barrage with a one out single and Girouard drove in a run with an RBI single.  After a walk to Davis, Thurman drove in two with a base hit and Conrad plated two more with a single before Clement made Cajuns' history with a blast down the line in right field for a triple to score two more runs.

Trahan's streak ended at 23 games when Rodriguez made a diving backhand stab of a line drive in the eighth inning.

Jackson State's only run off Marks came in the sixth on a solo homer by Rodriguez, his third of the year.

Girouard had three hits for the third straight game and is 10-15 for the four game week.

The two teams are scheduled to wrap up their three game series at 1pm Sunday, weather permitting.
