Rays Select UL Pitcher Matt Plitt In 37th Round

The Tampa Bay Rays selected Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun senior pitcher Matt Plitt in the 37th round, with pick number 1,117, on the third day of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Saturday.

A native of Texas City, Texas, Plitt is 2-0 with a 3.67 earned run average, along with five saves in 2014.

Plitt, a product of Texas City High School High School, has appeared in 25 games, all but one out of the bullpen, throwing 54 innings, allowing 39 hits, 22 earned runs, and 27 walks, while striking out 40 batters, heading into this weekend’s NCAA Super Regional series against the Ole Miss Rebels.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander was 4-1 with a 4.19 ERA. as a junior in 2013, his first season with UL.

Plitt became the second Louisiana player drafted by the Rays this year, joining second baseman Jace Conrad, who was taken in the 13th round.

In all seven Ragin' Cajuns, including Conrad and Plitt, along with Seth Harrison (Giants), Caleb Adams (Angels), Austin Robichaux (Angels), Ryan Leonards (White Sox), and Carson Baranik (Dodgers) were drafted this year.
