New Orleans Saints First Round Draft Choices: Kyle Turley (1998)

The first round of the 2016 NFL Draft will be held on Thursday, April 28, in Chicago, Illinois.

Between now and then, we’ll be looking back at all of the drafts of the New Orleans Saints, from 1967-2015.

Yesterday, we looked back at 1997.

Today: 1998

The pick: Kyle Turley, an offensive lineman, who played for the Saints for five years, from 1998-2002.

After playing his college football at San Diego St., Turley was selected by the Saints in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft.

A native of Provo, Utah, Turley made an immediate impact, starting at left guard for 15 games in his rookie season.

The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Turley went on to start every game at right tackle over the next four years, including the 2002 season, when he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Turley was traded to the St. Louis Rams prior to the 2003 season. He played one season there, before having to undergo back surgery, which forced him to miss two seasons.

After two years away from the game Turley returned, playing two seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs, from 2007-2008, before retiring.

In five seasons with the Saints, Turley appeared in 79 games, all as a starter.

In eight NFL seasons, Turley appeared in 109 games, including 107 as a starter.

Following his playing days, Turley became a country music recoding artist.

Following the selection of Turley, which turned out to be a good pick for the Saints, the franchise selected Washington tight end Cam Cleeland in the second round, and Florida defensive back Fred Weary in the fourth round.
