Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun football team plays host to the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday evening in the 12th Annual Herbert Heymann Classic.

The game marks the 2012 regular season opener for both teams.

Louisiana is coming off a 9-4 season in 2011, a season that concluded with a thrilling 32-30 victory over San Diego St. in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, while Lamar, an FCS football playing school out of the Southland Conference, finished 4-7 a season ago.

Lamar, who disbanded their football program at the end of the 1989 season, is now in their third season of football, since reinstating it prior to the 2009 season. The Cardinals have won nine games over the last two years.

The game marks the 111th season of intercollegiate football for the Cajuns, who own a 52-54-4 record in season openers, but are only 3-18 in their last 21 lid lifters.

Saturday’s game will mark the 105th home opener for UL, who has posted a 62-37-5 record in those games.

UL, which carries a four-game win streak in home openers into this week’s game, is just 1-3
in home openers against Lamar, winning in 1952 (14-13) before dropping games in 1954 (26-20), 1956 (21-14) and 1974 (38-13).

Louisiana leads the all-time series, 22-11, and has won three straight against the Cardinals, including a 42-33 win back in 1989, the last time the two school met.

Kick-off time is set for 6:07 pm at Cajun Field.

You can hear the broadcast, beginning with the Tailgate Show, a full two hours before game time, at 4:07 pm, on Sports Radio ESPN 1420, and espn1420.com.

Remember to tune into "The Rage", following the game, where we'll recap the contest, and give you a chance to voice your opinion.
