Former LSU football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel, who piloted the Tigers to a national championship, has died after a brief illness.  He was 89.

Dietzel was the head football coach from 1955-61 and later served as athletic director from 1978-82.  He retired to North Carolina, but moved back to Baton Rouge in 2003.

Dietzel was the last living member of the national championship coaching staff.
