Lafayette's own Daniel Cormier made his city proud yet again by defending his Light Heavyweight title at UFC 192 against Alexander Gustafsson.

The reigning champ always makes the best of his opportunities to put Lafayette on the map. Whenever the microphone came his way after defending his title, you know he had to rep his city.

"Thank you Houston! I'm from Lafayette, Louisiana. That's four hours from here," Cormier told the crowd. "Y'all supported a southern boy tonight."

Cormier, better known as "DC," survived one of the toughest tests of his entire career against the dangerous striker in his first title defense in the UFC. Both fighters landed shots that inflicted serious damage, Gustafsson mostly with the knees and Cormier with the uppercut.

Especially in the final round, DC tried to push through Gustafsson's lengthy defense and finish it off. In the end, it went to the judges...but they realized the good guy always wins.

When the fight was over, both fighters showed grace in a sport that naive fans are quick to label as brute and base. Gustafsson's nose and brows were beaten, and Cormier was still bleeding from a knee, but they made sure to give each other their dues like gentlemen after the fight. Gustafsson pushed the champ to his limits, and DC thanked him for it afterward.

"Thank you, Alex," Cormier said. "You made me a better man and a better fighter tonight."

Lafayette natives tend to dance to their own tunes. The same goes for DC. A lot of things in his life changed after being named the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, and he wants to return some things back to the way they used to be.

"I'm going to get away from promos and just be myself," DC said.

Dana White might not like him cutting down on the promos, but if that's what DC wants, we're all for it here in Lafayette.

The wrestling mats at Northside High School took a beating when he was growing up as a hard-nosed, determined local product. Now it's fighters from all across the globe taking a beating at the hands of DC. Great fighter, and an even better guy...as always, Geaux DC.
