Left hander Trey Cumbie fired a complete game five hit shutout Tuesday night, leading the Houston Cougars to a 4-0 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns before 5,247 at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

Cumbie (3-0), who came into the game with a 1.33 ERA, did not allow an extra base hit and allowed two runners to reach base in only one inning.  He walked two and struck out five in his 111 pitch performance.

"He was really good," head coach Tony Robichaux said, "and at the same time, it was a game we could have won if we didn't make a couple of mistakes in the outfield.  When you struggle at the plate you have to really play perfect defense and we didn't do that.  We have to do a better job of competing at the plate."

Jack Burk (0-3) turned in another solid performance for the Cajuns in a losing cause.  The redshirt freshman scattered eight hits in his seven innings of work and allowed just one earned run.  He did not walk a batter and fanned four.

"Again, he gave us a chance to win," Robichaux said.  He doesn't pitch like a freshman.  We needed to make a couple of plays that we didn't make.  If we do, it's a one run game."

Houston (14-5) scored in the second inning when Corey Julks singled with two out.  Connor Hollis singled him to third and Jelks scored when Kennon Fontenot bobbled the ball in left field.  The Cougars got two more in the fifth on another two out rally when Landon Etzel singled and went to third on Connor Wong's single and scored when the ball got away from Ishmael Edwards in center.  Grayson Padgett then singled Wong home to make the score 3-0.  Houston scored another run in the ninth off reliever Chris Charpentier for the final margin.

The Cajuns had runners in scoring position on four different occasions, but failed to get the hit they needed to get a rally started.  The Cajuns (11-7) were 0-15 with runners on base in the contest.

Louisiana will be back in action Wednesday night against the Tulane Green Wave.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm with ESPN1420 providing the broadcast beginning at 5:30.
